My Story as a Hairstylist
As a hairstylist for over 20 years, I loved the creativity, connection, and satisfaction that came with my work. But behind the scenes, my body was struggling. The long hours on my feet, repetitive movements, and constant bending and reaching started to take a toll on me in ways that I couldn’t ignore. Over time, I developed severe neck and back pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain, hip pain, and constant leg fatigue—symptoms that only worsened as the years went by. Every day, I pushed through the pain, determined to keep doing what I loved, until my body simply couldn’t take it anymore.
Living with hEDS: When the Pain Became Too Much to Ignore
What made these physical challenges even harder was my diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), a connective tissue disorder that made my joints more prone to injury and instability. My doctors told me that hairstyling was one of the worst career choices for someone with my condition, but I didn’t want to give it up. I struggled to find a balance, to work through the pain and adapt to my limitations, but I often felt defeated and isolated. I wanted so badly to keep doing my job, but it became clear that I needed to make some changes if I wanted to stay healthy.
Discovering Wellness and Finding My Purpose
In my search for solutions, I began exploring different wellness practices. I studied nutrition, movement techniques, meditation, and ways to reduce the toxic load in my environment. What started as a personal journey to manage my symptoms grew into a deeper passion for health and wellness. I realized I wasn’t alone—so many other stylists were facing similar physical challenges, feeling burnt out, and struggling to find ways to take care of themselves. That’s when I knew I wanted to help others in the same way I was helping myself.
The CALM Stylist Method: A Wellness Solution for Stylists
With my own experiences as both a hairstylist and a health coach, I developed The CALM Stylist Method, a holistic wellness program designed specifically for the unique needs of stylists. This method focuses on four key pillars that helped me reclaim my health and manage my hEDS: Conscious Eating, Awareness & Meditation, Low-Tox Lifestyle, and Movement That Heals. Each pillar is designed to fit into a busy stylist's life, with practical, actionable steps that can be done in small increments throughout the day. This program isn’t just about physical wellness; it’s about finding balance, reducing pain, and creating sustainable habits that support both body and mind.
